Auditory Awesomeness
It's here! It's here! "Ash to Ashes" the audiobook is HERE!
It's been a long bumpy road getting "Ash to Ashes" from text to narrated audiobook. While the process of reading a book out loud and recording it may sound like a simple enough concept, the reality is anything but. A single chapter can take 4-5 hours of editing, remastering, and review (and there's 70+ chapters in "Ash to Ashes"!). The recording quality has to meet specific industry standards. You can't have distractions or background noises in your recordings (even a computer's cooling fans can throw off a recording). Consistency between character voices has to be maintained between chapters and throughout the recording process. For an ACX producer, many hats have to worn: narrator/voice actor, director, sound technician, editor, producer, quality assurance reviewer, and liaison to the rights holder (i.e. the author).
In short, Jack Voraces performed a miracle. He brought "Ash to Ashes" to life in a way I could only have dreamed of (short of going to the big screen). From the first time I heard his voice, I knew that he was Ashton Firebrand, and he created such unique and well-developed characterizations to the voices of Kalamsham and all of the other characters that I found myself blown away by what he accomplished.
It's not my story to tell, so I'll avoid going into details, but Jack had plenty of other life experiences that added to the complicated process of producing the audiobook; some of them unexpected, some of them joyful, some of them more involved and time-consuming than he had anticipated. (Life happened? Who'd have thought it?) But in the long run, he came through where it mattered and his excitement in seeing this project go live to market may even rival my own.
Congratulations, Jack Voraces on the release of our audiobook! It's been a pleasure working with you, sir!
